Community Involvement

On behalf of the Killarney Heights Public School Parents & Citizens (P&C) Committee, we warmly welcome you to our school and community.

Our school values strong partnerships with our families and community. Parents and carers can get involved through our Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) or by volunteering at our school. Your time and support help make our school a better place for everyone.

Parents & Citizens Association (P&C)

As a little background, government schools (also known as public schools) are free to attend for Australian citizens and permanent residents. However, there are many educational resources not included in what we, as parents, might assume would or should be provided. P&C associations exist to support schools and help bridge this gap. They are not-for-profit associations, designed to provide resources for our children to help ensure they receive the best education possible, as well as strengthening the ties between the school and the wider community.

Our P&C is a group of parents, carers and school community members. They assist with school planning, fundraising, events and volunteering. Our P&C works in partnership with our school to promote the interests of our school community.

Joining the P&C a great way to meet other families, get involved and contribute to our school's future. We would love to have you on board!

Volunteer at our School

At Killarney Heights, the P&C is an integral part of the school, providing core services and activities for parents and kids. This includes running the school canteen, managing the uniform shop including the in-person fitting service, funding the music programs and operating instrument hire services and supporting Environment and Sustainability initiatives. Any profits are re-invested directly into the school.

In addition, our P&C has a great track record helping our school improve the learning environment and experience for our children, including paying for air-conditioning installed into every classroom, technology (digital whiteboards, iPads, STEM), playground equipment, shaded play areas and seating.

We achieve all of this by collecting voluntary contributions of $50 per child per term, re-investing profits from services offered and various fundraising initiatives throughout the year.

Not all schools have such an active P&C, and we are lucky to have lots of passionate and engaged parent volunteers who support our initiatives and generously give their time.

Helping out at school is a great way to get involved in your school community.

Volunteer opportunities include:
* helping in the canteen
* getting involved in the P&C
* listening to children read in the classroom
* volunteering on sports days and other school events
* helping supervise excursions

What are the KHPS P&C Objectives?
* Create and foster a sense of pride in our school
* Foster sense of community and break down barriers to make everyone feel welcome
* Role model and teach our kids about giving back
* Raise funds to invest into the school
* Have fun!

What are the current KHPS P&C priorities?

We've strategically allocated most of our funds in 2024 and 2025 towards acquiring much-needed new technology and upgrading existing systems. These enhancements are designed to support modern software and tools, allowing our teachers to focus on what they do best—nurturing and educating our children—rather than being hindered by slow IT or outdated equipment. By embracing these advancements, we help our educators to fully leverage contemporary technology to enrich the learning experience.

Working hand in hand with the school, we collaborate closely to ensure our efforts are aligned with the broader educational goals. In addition to our technological investments, we remain committed to fostering the arts through continued support of our music programs. We are also dedicated to enhancing the aesthetic and overall atmosphere of the school, making it an even more inspiring place for our children to learn and grow.

Who runs the KHPS P&C?

The P&C at Killarney Heights Public School is run by parent volunteers and governed by NSW P&C Federation. Our P&C Executive team is made up of the President, Secretary and the Treasurer. These are all volunteer positions that any parent can put their hand up for. There are also several P&C sub-committees manned by volunteers, for example Fundraising & Community Events, Music Program, Environment. On the social side, there are also always additional opportunities.

How do I get involved?

We encourage everyone involved with our school community to participate and we welcome the energy and skills of new volunteers every year. This is essential to ensure the continuity of services to students and parents that the school community has come to expect. It is always inspiring to see parents giving generously of their time, skills, and money to support the school. For the volunteers, it is very rewarding to visit the school and see what a big difference we have made.

We also have a sub-WhatsApp group for P&C Volunteers within the WhatsApp Community group.

To keep up to date with our plans and activities, please come along to any of our meetings (5th Wednesday of each term). It’s a great opportunity to hear about what’s happening from the school’s executive team, FANS and each of the sub-committees. We also use some of the meetings to discuss themes which our community have indicated are important to them.

What is FANS and how does it relate to the P&C?

The French-Speaking Association of the North Shore (FANS) runs the exceptional bilingual program here at Killarney Heights Public School. FANS role at the school is to ensure delivery of that curriculum, as well as to provide additional educational support such as after-school French study. FANS also joins us in supporting many international families, particularly Francophone families, as they are welcomed to the school and wider community. FANS and the P&C work closely together to build our strong and unique community.

See you soon…

We really look forward to getting to know your family over the years. Reach out to us if we can be of any help at communications@khps-pc.com.au

Yours sincerely,
KHPS P&C Committee
