Languages

In NSW primary schools, the study of a language is optional.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

Although not a Key Learning Area in K-6 schools, Killarney Heights Public School has a focus on additional language learning.  Visit our Bilingual Program page for more information about our unique and celebrated English-French Blingual Program which has international recognition through the LabelFrancÉducation.

Additionally, with a high number of students from a Chinese Speaking Background, our school has a dedicated Community Language Mandarin teacher for 2 days each week. Students with a Chinese Speaking Background are able to access 2 hours of Mandarin and Chinese Culture lessons each week during school hours.

With a strong focus on multi-culturalism and languages, our school also currently works with Community Language School providers to offer after-school Mandarin and Portuguese lessons for interested families. These programs are additional and separate to the in-school hours French and Mandarin programs.
